The Stretcher Van Operator provides compassionate care and transport for elderly, disabled and temporarily injured individuals. The position involves door to door medical transportation. The primary objective of the stretcher van operator is to provide respectful medical transportation, while preserving the patient’s dignity and ensuring safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route service for customers, and reads and interprets road signs in English.
  • Fuels the assigned vehicle.
  • Maintain vehicles clean and organized looking professional.
  • Assists handicap passengers, in and out of vehicle; operates lift ramps via remote control or manual lever, and operation of patient securement devices as needed.
  • Transfer patient to and from stretcher, load stretcher in and out of stretcher van.
  • Transfer patient in and out of a stair chair and carry patient in a stair chair up and down steps of buildings and tight spaces.
  • Responsible for safe efficient transportation clients from point of pickup to destination.
  • Assists admitting and billing personnel to obtain and record information related to the patient’s vital statistics and to establish the necessity for medical transportation.
  • Completes trip reports on clients.
  • Shall perform a daily check of assigned vehicle and appropriate equipment and shall document vehicle stock –on appropriate forms.
  • Serves as a company representative promoting positive customer relationships through proactive involvement in public business and community activities.
  • Must be able to work a variety of shift assignments, week-ends, and holidays, and are also subject to mandatory overtime.
  • Shall respond to calls as directed by the communications center.
  • Shall operate communications equipment in their assigned to stretcher van as prescribed by company policy and all applicable ordinances by laws.
  • Maintains crew’s quarters, vehicles and medical communication equipment and replenishes equipment and supplies.
  • Completes field care reports patient billing and trip records.
  • Shall comply with all company policies and procedures and all applicable ordinances or laws.
  • Shall operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and prudent manner and adhere to all company policies or procedures and applicable ordinances or laws governing such operations.
  • Shall maintain on person at all times current certificates as required.
  • Additional Duties may be assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education / Experience

  • High School Diploma, or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above;

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to accurately complete forms and write concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information to co-workers, licensed healthcare professionals, communications center personnel, supervisors, managers and administrators.
  • Ability to listen actively and comprehend the meaning of communications with co-workers, licensed healthcare professionals, communications center personnel, supervisors, managers and administrators.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute, rate, percent, and to interpret graphs and maps.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to define problems, establish facts based on both objective and subjective data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret basic physiological and psychological signs and symptoms and identify those that are not normal.

Knowledge

  • Having knowledge of customer service principles, city geography, location of main streets, map reading methods, standard office equipment, and standard record keeping.

Skill

  • Able to use computers and applicable software applications. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, keyboarding.
  • Maintaining records, operating standard office equipment, operating radio communications equipment; communicating and interacting effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public, to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive work direction.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current certification in CPR/AED & First AID. – We will train You!
  • Any and all federal, state, local requirements must be met.

  • The employee must frequently push a wheelchair with or without a handicap patient in it with a max patient weight of 350lbs.
  • The employee must frequently lift and or move up to 175 pounds without assistance and 350 pounds with assistance.
